Wildflower Shade Tolerant Matting Turf is a specialist, ready-to-lay wildflower turf developed to perform reliably in shaded and low-light environments, including areas beneath trees, woodland edges, and locations with dappled sunlight. While specifically designed for shaded applications, it is not restricted to these environments and will also thrive in open meadow sites where the wider species mix can fully flourish.

Developed by John Chambers Wildflowers using a unique soil-less growing system, this turf is more drought tolerant than conventional wildflower turf products and offers improved resilience across a wide range of soil types. The turf contains a diverse mix of over 40 species of wildflowers and grasses (subject to seed availability), carefully selected to establish well in challenging conditions while delivering strong visual and ecological performance.

With approximately 80% wildflowers and 20% grasses, this turf naturally develops into a biodiverse habitat supporting birds, mammals, bees, butterflies, and a wide range of other invertebrate species. Flowering from April through to October, it provides long-lasting nectar and pollen sources throughout the growing season, contributing to biodiversity net gain, ecological mitigation, and sustainable land management objectives.

Installation, Watering & Maintenance Overview

Prepare the soil by removing all weeds and existing vegetation, then lightly cultivate the surface to create a level, fine tilth. Lay the turf immediately after delivery, ensuring each roll is tightly butted against the next with no overlaps or gaps. Press the turf firmly into place to ensure good root-to-soil contact.

Water thoroughly immediately after installation. During the initial establishment period, particularly in dry weather, continue watering to prevent the turf from drying out. Once established, watering is only required during prolonged dry spells.

Maintenance is minimal. Perform one annual cut at the end of the growing season, removing all cuttings to prevent nutrient build-up. Avoid heavy foot traffic, particularly under trees, until the plants are fully established. Monitor for invasive or aggressive weeds and remove promptly to maintain species diversity.

This product is a living, perishable item and is cut fresh to order directly from the grower. Availability is subject to live stock levels at the time of order.

On-Site Storage & Handling

If immediate installation is not possible upon delivery:

Unstack pallets immediately to allow airflow

Store turf in a cool, shaded area

Do not water turf while rolled, as this can cause overheating and rot

In warm weather, lay turf on the day of delivery wherever possible

In cooler conditions, turf may be stored for up to 48 hours

If delays are unavoidable, unroll turf in strips to allow it to breathe

Failure to lay turf within the recommended timeframe may result in deterioration, discolouration, or failure to establish and is not covered by guarantee.

Cancellation Policy – Turf & Wildflower Matting Products

All turf and wildflower matting products are cut fresh to order and are therefore non-stock, perishable items.

Cancellations must be made as soon as possible after placing an order

Orders can only be cancelled if the turf has not yet been cut or prepared for dispatch

Once cutting has begun or the goods are in transit, cancellation or refusal of delivery will result in the full order value being charged

Turf must be laid within 24–48 hours of delivery to maintain quality and viability
