Thuja Plicata - Western Red Cedar

Thuja plicata, commonly known as Western Red Cedar or Giant Arbor-vitae, was introduced into Britain from North America in 1853 as a parkland ornamental tree. Despite its common name, it is actually a cypress rather than a true cedar.

A tall, narrow evergreen with fragrant foliage, it has become a popular alternative to Leylandii for hedging where a slightly slower-growing, dense evergreen screen is required.

Hedges should be trimmed twice a year — in June and September — to maintain dense growth.

If necessary, plants can be cut back into older growth without creating bare patches. Ensure plants are watered during prolonged dry periods, particularly when young.
