Pure Poplar Shield Tree Guard

Pure Poplar Shield is a sustainable, plastic-free tree guard designed to protect young trees and support successful establishment in forestry, woodland creation, agricultural and landscaping projects. Manufactured using just two materials – natural poplar wood and recycled, non-galvanised wire – this innovative wooden tree shelter eliminates the need for plastic tubes, synthetic polymers, adhesives or chemical bonding agents. The poplar timber is sourced as a by-product of the plywood manufacturing industry, making efficient use of an existing natural resource. Already used in European forestry, including Germany, France and Austria, Pure Poplar Shield offers UK and Irish farmers, landowners, estate managers and commercial tree planting contractors a practical alternative to conventional plastic tree guards.

Unlike traditional enclosed plastic tree shelters, Pure Poplar Shield features an open, breathable slatted design that encourages natural airflow around developing trees. This ventilation helps reduce the build-up of heat within the shelter during warmer weather, while allowing young trees to experience more natural growing conditions. Exposure to circulating air may also encourage gradual hardening off, helping trees acclimatise to their surroundings as they establish. The wooden construction provides a physical barrier against browsing animals, although the appropriate shelter height and protection level should be selected to suit local wildlife pressures. Its flexible construction also allows individual guards to be joined together, creating larger diameters for established saplings, larger trees and specialist planting requirements.

Developed with sustainability and practical installation in mind, Pure Poplar Shield is particularly suitable for large-scale tree planting schemes, commercial forestry, farm woodland creation, agroforestry, estate planting and environmental restoration projects. The guards are supplied flat-packed to simplify transportation, storage and handling on planting sites, while their plastic-free construction helps reduce reliance on conventional polypropylene tree protection products. As the natural poplar wood reaches the end of its useful life, it can biodegrade, avoiding the plastic fragments and microplastics associated with deteriorating plastic shelters. Available in 600mm and 1200mm heights, with a nominal 150mm internal diameter that can be expanded by joining guards, Pure Poplar Shield is an adaptable tree protection solution for sustainable planting projects throughout the UK and Ireland.

Features & Benefits

• Plastic-free tree protection – Manufactured from natural poplar wood and recycled, non-galvanised wire, with no plastic, synthetic polymers or adhesives.

• Biodegradable poplar wood – The natural timber can break down over time, reducing the need to recover deteriorating plastic shelters from planting sites.

• Breathable, open-slatted construction – Promotes airflow around developing trees, helping minimise the heat build-up associated with enclosed plastic tree tubes.

• Supports natural tree establishment – Exposure to circulating air and outdoor conditions encourages gradual acclimatisation and natural hardening off.

• Made from timber industry by-products – Poplar wood sourced from plywood manufacturing makes productive use of an existing renewable material.

• Recycled wire fastening – Uses non-galvanised recycled wire rather than plastic components or synthetic bonding materials.

• Expandable diameter – Individual tree guards can be joined together to create wider shelters for larger trees, saplings and specialist planting applications.

• Flat-packed for efficient transportation – Space-saving construction supports easier storage, distribution and handling across commercial planting operations.

• Suitable for varied planting schemes – Ideal for forestry, farm woodland, estate planting, landscaping and environmental conservation projects.

• Established European forestry application – A tree protection approach already used in German, French and Austrian forestry projects.

• Available in two practical heights – Choose 60cm or 1.2m guards to suit different tree species, planting environments and project requirements.

Sizes Available

60cm Pure Poplar Shield Tree Guard – 150mm Diameter

A compact, plastic-free wooden tree shelter suitable for young saplings and smaller tree planting projects. Ideal for farm woodland, estate planting, landscaping, conservation work and other applications where a lower shelter height is appropriate.

120cm Pure Poplar Shield Tree Guard – 150mm Diameter

A taller wooden tree shelter designed for young tree establishment in commercial forestry, woodland creation, agricultural and estate planting projects. Provides increased shelter height where site conditions and browsing pressures require a taller tree guard.

Expandable Diameter Option

Both sizes can be joined together to create a larger internal diameter, providing greater flexibility for larger saplings, established young trees and specialist planting requirements.
