Pyrus Communis - Wild Pear

Pyrus communis, commonly known as Wild Pear, is the ancestor of the cultivated pear and an elegant, columnar deciduous tree valued for its abundant spring blossom and strong autumn colour. In early spring, it produces masses of large white flowers, creating a striking display before developing glossy green foliage that turns rich shades of gold and orange in autumn.

Although often regarded as a native British tree, Wild Pear is believed to have originated in China and has been cultivated in Britain for thousands of years. It is highly adaptable, growing well on most soils in full sun or partial shade, and makes an excellent addition to woodland, hedgerows, and larger gardens.

The greyish-brown bark becomes attractively cracked with age, and some stems may bear light thorns. In autumn, small edible fruits develop, varying from pear-shaped to round, providing both ornamental and wildlife value.
