Euonymus Europaeus - Spindleberry

Euonymus europaeus, commonly known as Spindleberry, is a striking British native shrub often found in hedgerows on chalky soils in southern England. Fast-growing and extremely hardy, it is particularly valued for its spectacular autumn display, when mid-green leaves turn brilliant red and contrast vividly with its distinctive pink four-lobed fruits that split open to reveal bright orange seeds.

Spindleberry performs best in mixed wildlife hedges, woodland margins, and exposed sites, though it also makes an attractive ornamental shrub in gardens. It thrives on well-drained or chalky soils and tolerates exposed conditions. In late spring, clusters of small greenish-yellow flowers attract a wide range of pollinators, including bees, hoverflies, and St Mark’s Fly. The vivid fruits provide ornamental interest well into autumn, though the seeds are poisonous and not suitable for consumption.

Historically, the very hard wood was used for making spindles, skewers, pipe stems, and artists’ charcoal, while the bark was used medicinally. Due to being a host plant for beet and bean aphids, it should not be planted near agricultural crops of this type.
