CSAM3 Herbal leys - No red clover & chicory 14kg

The CSAM3 Herbal Leys – No Red Clover & Chicory 14kg is a specialist grass-free legume and herb seed mixture designed for overseeding into existing grassland to establish or enhance a diverse, productive herbal ley. Specially formulated without red clover or chicory, this mixture combines 8 legume species with 4 complementary herb species, providing a varied selection of forage and flowering plants to improve botanical diversity within established grass swards.

The mixture includes White Clover, Berseem Clover, Sainfoin, Lucerne, Crimson Clover, Vetch, Sweet Yellow Blossom Clover and Yellow Trefoil, alongside Sheep's Parsley, Ribwort Plantain, Burnet and Yarrow.

These carefully selected species help create a diverse, legume- and herb-rich sward, supporting productive livestock forage, natural nitrogen fixation, soil structure and resilience to varying growing conditions. The combination of flowering legumes and herbs can also provide valuable pollen and nectar sources for pollinating insects throughout the growing season.

Designed for grassland diversification and herbal ley overseeding, this mixture is particularly suited to farmers and land managers looking to introduce legumes and herbs without including red clover or chicory.

The recommended sowing rate is 5kg per acre, with the 14kg pack covering approximately 2.8 acres. This mixture is designed for overseeding into established grassland or for use alongside an appropriate grass seed component when establishing a new herbal ley.

Scheme Information

CSAM3 – Herbal Leys (SFI26)

This mixture provides a diverse legume and herb component for herbal ley establishment and overseeding.

For SFI26 CSAM3, the seed mix used to establish the herbal ley must contain at least one grass species, two legume species and two herb or wildflower species. As this product contains no grass seed, a suitable grass component must be included to meet the seed mix requirements.

Farmers and land managers should check the current requirements of their individual agreement before sowing.

Herbal ley overseeding

Established grassland improvement

Legume- and herb-rich sward development

Grassland diversification

Productive cattle and sheep forage systems

Agricultural grassland management

Environmental land management

Herbal ley establishment associated with CSAM3 where the complete seed mix and established sward meet the applicable requirements

When to Sow

Late summer / early autumn, subject to suitable soil and weather conditions.

Overseeding should be carried out when there is sufficient moisture and growing time for the legumes and herbs to establish before winter. Avoid sowing too late in the season.

The existing grass sward should be managed to reduce competition and provide good seed-to-soil contact for successful establishment.

Vetch

A forage legume that helps broaden the mixture's plant diversity and contributes to the nitrogen-fixing component.

Sweet Yellow Blossom Clover & Yellow Trefoil

Complementary legumes that increase species diversity and provide additional flowering plants within the established herbal ley.

A combination of four herb species providing varied rooting habits, botanical diversity and additional flowering interest throughout the growing season.

Management & Establishment

This is a grass-free legume and herb seed mixture intended primarily for overseeding into an existing grass sward rather than creating a grass-free ley in isolation.

For successful establishment, ensure the existing grass is sufficiently open to allow good seed-to-soil contact. Suitable moisture, appropriate sowing depth and careful early management will help encourage the development of legumes and herbs within the sward.

Once established, the herbal ley can be managed through appropriate grazing or cutting, allowing plants sufficient time to recover and flower where required.

Where the product is used for SFI26 CSAM3 Herbal Leys, the overall establishment must meet the action's requirements, including the minimum grass, legume and herb species within the seed mix.

The mixture offers a practical solution for farmers seeking to increase grassland species diversity, support productive forage and develop legume- and herb-rich swards without using red clover or chicory.

Note: This mixture contains no grass seed, red clover or chicory. It is intended as a legume and herb component for overseeding into an established grass sward. Where used for CSAM3, the complete seed mix and establishment must meet the relevant scheme requirements.
