PROJECT OVERVIEW
Green-tech collaborated with Gavin Jones, Nurture Group, and other industry partners to deliver the landscape works for the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. Supplying soils, tree-planting essentials, irrigation, and other landscaping products, Green-tech helped create therapeutic gardens and outdoor spaces designed to support patients, families, and staff.
The project was led by main contractor I&G, with Leeds Hospitals Charity managing the £6.8 million fundraising appeal to build the specialist centre. re-form landscape architecture provided the design consultancy, co-creating gardens with patients, families, and clinical teams to provide calm, sociable, and reflective spaces. Features include circular walkways, sensory planting, “grow your own” plots, and communal areas for reflection and interaction. Woodland-style planting and new trees frame the northern entrance.
Green-tech’s products formed the foundations of the gardens, ensuring all planting and landscaping elements could thrive.
GREEN-TECH SOLUTIONS
Green-tech supplied a comprehensive range of products to Gavin Jones for the landscape works, ensuring the therapeutic gardens were built on a strong, durable foundation. Over 900 tonnes of Green-tree topsoil and growing media were delivered for tree pits, shrub and planting beds. Soil improvers enhanced soil structure and drainage and supported plant establishment, while composts provided nutrients to support long-term growth.
For the tree planting, Green-tech provided specialist tree stakes, ties, and anchoring systems to ensure secure and healthy establishment. Mulch and ground protection solutions were applied across beds and pathways to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect soil structure. Irrigation and watering were supported through Green-tech’s Mona Irrigation range, providing a reliable, controlled water supply for new planting and enhancing the sustainability of the gardens.
COLLABORATION AND PARTNERS
Hannah Thompson, Associate Director at re-form landscape architecture, commented: “Being entrusted with the landscape architecture for the Rob Burrow Centre was a profound responsibility. Our design process was deeply collaborative, rooted in listening to the experiences of patients, families, and clinical teams. We wanted to create more than just a garden - a sanctuary that extends the Centre’s compassionate care into the outdoors.”
Ricky Whiteman, Head of Estimating (North) at Gavin Jones, added: “When I heard re-form were designing the scheme, I knew we had to be involved and wanted to bring trusted partners with us. Rob is a hero to so many, and by joining forces, we’ve been able to support this incredible cause with expertise and materials supplied for the greater good.”
Other partners emphasised the importance of collaboration:
• Graham Richardson, Group Managing Director at Johnsons Nurseries: “Rob’s story has inspired us all. Supporting the centre with plants for its gardens is our way of helping create a place of hope and dignity for people with MND and their families.”
• A spokesperson for Lindum Turf: “We’re proud to be supplying our Festival turf and wildflower turf to such an inspiring project. Being part of a scheme that reflects compassion, resilience, and community spirit is a real honour.”
• Tom Owen of Van den Berk Nurseries: “Our involvement was about creating a complete package of support from local and European nurseries, making sure this centre has the very best landscape setting, delivered at the very best value.”
IMPACT AND OUTCOME
The Rob Burrow Centre gardens demonstrate the value of collaboration across the supply chain. By supplying materials to Gavin Jones, Green-tech played a key role in delivering a carefully designed outdoor space that complements the centre’s state-of-the-art facilities. Patients, families, and staff now have access to gardens that offer calm, sociable, and restorative spaces, underpinned by high-quality materials.
“Supplying soils, composts and tree-planting essentials may sound like the practical detail, but it’s these foundations that will help the gardens thrive as a space of comfort and support for patients and families”
